Discussion of characters used in the taxonomic treat-ment and in the key to European Cyphon species and in the classification of the genus. The existing type material has been examined and 14 lectotypes are selected and 2 neotypes are designated. Development, life-cycles and habits as well as ecology, morphology, colouration and distribution are taken into account.
